The Academy of Fine Arts of Florence (Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze), the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome (Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma) and the sculpture professors Mrs. Alessandra Porfidia and Mrs. Patricia Bisogni, in collaboration with the Tinos Marble Sculpture Workshops, hosted the Sculpture Seminar in Marble for University Students.
In recent years, students of the Academy have traveled to Tinos to sculpt the tinian marble. It is worth noting that this collaboration is being initiated by the Alessandra Porfidia Professor of Marble Sculpture at the Academy of Florence. The Sculpture Seminar in Marble runs from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th September. There are 16 students from the two Academies, who want to be inspired by the picturesque Pyrgos village, its architecture, tradition and landscape of the region and to create beautiful creations.
Sculpture Seminar in Marble – Getting Started
The Sculpture Seminar in Marble began on the afternoon of Monday September 10th, with students and teachers visiting our workshop. Marble sculptor Ioannis Hondrogiannis made a brief introduction to marble sculpture, showing the traditional way marble is crafted.
The next day, the students of the two Italian Academies went to the workshops of Pyrgos village, in Tinos, and began to work. Initially they created their own models in drawing and clay, and then with the advice of teachers and the help of marble sculptors, they began to work in marble.
Our mable workshop hosts 8 students who, under the guidance of marble sculptors Antonis and Ioannis Hondrogiannis, learn how to handle tools and sculpt marble. Our goal is to share with our students, our marble sculpture experience and know-how and to give them as much information as possible about the marble so that they can become familiar with the material and gain the confidence and respect a marble sculptor should have.
Sculpture Seminar in Marble – Completion
The Marble Sculpture Seminar ends on Sunday September 16th 2018, with the closing ceremony taking place at the Marble Museum of Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation. There, students will present their works in an exhibition that runs until Wednesday, September 19th.
We are very pleased that for another year we are participating in such activities that promote the art and culture of Tinos worldwide.
